Bowman: 7 Months!

Look at my big boy!! Bowman, you have become a pro at sitting...and you love it!! This latest milestone has introduced you to a whole new world. At the beginning of the month, you still needed support, but by mid-month you were completely on your own. In fact, you've even moved from your baby tub to a nightly bath with your big brother...which is so sweet! You love to splash in the water and, invariably, Mommy and Daddy are always soaking wet when we're done. While sitting up, you reach as far as you can for a toy and, sometimes, end up on your belly. You struggle to get on all fours and usually end up scooting backwards. I really think crawling will happen in this next month; you want to be in motion desperately! Your feeding schedule is definitely set: 4 bottles a day with 3 meals...you seem to like almost everything you've had, though it seems green beans are your least favorite. You get so excited when we put you in the high chair; you know the good stuff is on the way! There's been a little crankiness this month but I think your teeth are trying to make their appearance. The bottom teeth are right below the gumline...will they finally break through this month???
Sleep is still good; you average about 11 hours a night with 2 daily naps. Of course, this changes if we're in the car since that still seems to be your favorite place to sleep. And, you still take mini naps at daycare...but thankfully it doesn't seem to affect your nights. You usually wake up happy; Daddy and I have even turned off the monitor...you will chat for a good 30 minutes before you're ready to get out of your crib...we use this time to catch a little more shut eye!!

You love playing with your big brother and think Porter is the most hilarious person in the family. You giggle at his every move; my heart melts every time! You two aren't afraid to make a disaster when you play, but I can't complain when you are both so happy.

Bowman, thank you for another amazing month...we can't wait to see what the next few weeks will bring!!!

Bowman's First Trip to the Beach

This past weekend, we headed down to Beaufort for the Memorial Day holiday. Unfortunately, the weather did not participate; nevertheless we headed out to the beach on Sunday. I was determined to introduce Bowman to the sand and surf, and I'm so glad I did...he loved every minute!! He picked the sand up over and over and, thankfully, did not put any in his mouth. A few hours in the "sun" resulted in a very long nap...does it get any better???

For Mandy

"We Went Out Last Night"

Last night, we drove up to Greenville with Mark and Tori Tibshrany to see Kenny Chesney in concert. The tickets were part of my Mother's Day gift, and I was excited about a night out...without the kids! In fact, Bowman and Porter spent the night with Grammy and Pop-Pop, so I even managed to sleep until 9 am...heaven! Anyway, we met the Tibshranys in Chapin, and our road trip began! We made it to Greenville in time for a few drinks and appetizers at Wild Wings before we headed off to the Bi-Lo Center. In Greenville, we all commented on how much we love the area. How nice that they were able to create such a beautiful downtown area...with trees! I think Columbia could definitely learn a few lessons from G-Vegas. And who knows...maybe a move to the Upstate is in our future???

We always have so much fun with Mark and Tori, and last night was no exception. The Coronas were ample; I may even have to admit I was a tad bit overserved...oh well! What's a Southern concert without a little hangover!?!?
Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lambert opened for Kenny. We missed the 1st act, but made it inside in time to see Miranda perform. Gotta love a girl with a pink guitar...BTW, I don't know why my pictures look so far away...perhaps my camera needs to warning: "Concert in camera is closer than it appears."
Kenny Chesney finally came on at 9pm. Though I would never utter these words about any other man, he does look damn good in tight jeans and a muscle T. We had these women behind us who were HILARIOUS! They hooted and hollered for Mr. Chesney the entire time; guess they were hoping he'd glance up in their direction. I've heard his concerts are great, and last night did not disappoint. I even managed to tape his entrance...I think the women behind me would definitely think his tractor is sexy!!! You can hear their shrieks when they realize where he is...ENJOY!

A Visit With An Old Friend

Today was a special treat!! One of my oldest friends from high school was home from Canada and was able to come up to Columbia. Kelly was the first person I met in Beaufort and we became fast friends. Unfortunately, we lost touch in college, but ended up rekindling our friendship before either of us were married. I'm so thankful we've been able to share so many exciting memories, most recently the birth of our children. Kelly is the mommy to 1-year-old Gracie and, having not seen her since she was only a few months old, I was glad to finally get to see her again. Having said that, the last time Kelly and I saw one another was when I was pregnant with Bowman...oh things have changed! We decided to meet at the Zoo; it's such a great place to take the kids for a fun and relaxing afternoon. Porter found a new friend at the zoo...one of the Koala bears was actually out of his tree and walked up to the wall to "say hello!"

Kelly was nice enough to take Porter on the carousel with she and Gracie, and I think she quickly discovered 2 is a lot different from 1! Porter loves the carousel, and would probably spend most of the afternoon there. Unfortunately, Gracie was not a fan...but, they stayed on the ride nonetheless. Way to be a trooper Gracie!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that Bowman was there too...

One of Kelly's friends was in town from DC, so Sally and her daughter Quinn joined us as well. We attempted a nice picture, but it turned into Porter attempting to ride the carousel a THIRD time. Aren't you ready for #2 Kelly!?!?!
I was so glad Kelly and Gracie were able to come up to Columbia, even if it was only for a few hours. Hopefully we'll get together again soon...I'm still trying to convince my husband that we need to take a trip to Canada!

Happy Nurses's Day

I love my job...But, don't get me wrong, there are days that I wonder why I do what I do. Hospital administrators make it harder and harder to take care of patients; the paperwork is endless and seems to always change. I realize they are trying to cover all their bases but, with so much red tape, I often worry that those in charge are forgetting what it truly means to be a nurse. Gone are the days of being able to sit by your patient's side, comforting he/she and their family, and doing everything you can to make their stay at the hospital manageable. With patient loads becoming heavier and patients becoming sicker before they even come to the hospital, many days we, as nurses, can barely keep our heads above water. But, we all decided to take on this profession for the same reasons: we want to be patient advocates and do everything in our power to do so! The nursing shortage continues, and the economy has forced many hospitals to enforce hiring freezes. I want to thank all nurses out there for everything you do...12-hour shifts can be hard on the body, both mentally and physically. And to my co-workers, thank you for being an amazing group of women (and man to the best nurse manager ever!!)...you make my days at work and away from my children bearable. We have laughed, cried, and been there for each other in numerous ways. I wouldn't be at Lexington Medical Center if it wasn't for you...HAPPY NURSES'S DAY!!!!!!!
